Fees and Conditions
I set my speaker fees depending on a number of factors. Please expect to have a conversation with me about an honorarium for a keynote address or workshop, whether it is in person or virtual.
If you are asking for an in-person talk that requires air travel, I will likely request a business class or preferred economy seat, as it helps me to manage my overall well-being while travelling. It will also help to ensure that I arrive at your location less tired and ready to bring my best self to your event. If a higher class of travel is not possible for you due to administrative constraints on your side, I may request that you accept a virtual keynote instead, but am happy to discuss.
In general, I prefer to make my own travel arrangements, but I am happy to work with you on this. It will be very helpful for me to have all the details sorted out well in advance of the actual travel dates.
If your policy is not to pay speakers, I am likely to ask for other benefits, such as the talk being live streamed and/or recorded and made publicly available for free for participants and anyone who wishes to watch it later.
If you are requesting a virtual talk, please note that I generally work between 08:00 and 16:00 Calgary time, Monday to Friday. I can occasionally make adjustments to this, but please know that I generally avoid taking on work during typical sleeping hours. I do this to be mindful of my health and avoid over-exhaustion.
As someone whose work is deeply focused on ethics, I do not accept invitations from organizations that are not aligned with my values. I also do not travel to countries that have an extreme risk for personal safety (i.e., a recommendation of avoiding non-essential or all travel), according to the Government of Canada.
Topics
I speak on the topic of ethics and integrity in education broadly. My talks often focus on academic integrity, including the ethical use of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) and advanced technologies. My positionality keeps me focused on social justice, human dignity, and human rights.
I am often asked to speak about Postplagiarism, a concept I explore in my book on Plagiarism in Higher Education: Tackling Tough Topics in Higher Education.
You can ask me to speak about any topic I have blogged about or anything else I have published.

Obligations to my Employer
My primary role is that of a Professor in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary, Canada. I am obliged to seek permission from my dean for outside professional activities to ensure that they do not interfere with my primary responsibilities to my university.
My employer requires details of the speaking engagements that involve me to be physically away from campus (i.e., exact dates including travel days, name and location of the event, where I will be staying, and so on). I am required to provide these details in advance, in part, to ensure that my health insurance will cover me while I am engaged in work-related travel.
If your request involves me being away from Calgary, please be prepared to provide me with an official letter of invitation (.pdf format is fine). The letter should be on letterhead and bear the signature of the person extending the official invitation. I will share your invitation letter with my dean and be transparent about the details of the event.

On location notes:
Because my work includes advocacy for equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, for in person speaking events, even if your event is small, I will request a microphone because I want to model good accessibility practices. I can work with a hand held, lapel or headset mic.
This should go without saying, but in the interest of clarity and safety, please ensure that cords and cables that I might walk over are firmly secured to the floor with gaffer’s tape.
Incorporating time for me to see the venue before the actual event is helpful.
