New project: Artificial Intelligence and Academic Integrity: The Ethics of Teaching and Learning with Algorithmic Writing Technologies

Today the University of Calgary announced the recipients of the 2022 Teaching and Learning Grants. I’m pleased to share that our project was among those awarded funding. Here are the details of our project:

Artificial Intelligence and Academic Integrity: The Ethics of Teaching and Learning with Algorithmic Writing Technologies

Research Team (all from the University of Calgary)

Focus area (as aligned with University of Calgary research priority areas): Innovation and entrepreneurial thinking 

Grant type: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Grants

Project scope: This project will be conducted at the University of Calgary. Data will be collected from faculty and students, upon successful ethics approval of the project.

Funding amount: $40,000 CAD

Project duration: 2022-2025

Project status

This project just received funding and have submitted documentation to have the project set up in the university systems. We are waiting for that step to be approved. In the meantime, we are preparing our application to the Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (CFREB) at the University of Calgary.

Please note: This is an internal University of Calgary grant. We are not able to include any external collaborators in this particular project.

Alberta Council on Academic Integrity 2022 Provincial Meeting

Registration is open for the Alberta Council on Academic Integrity (ACAI) Spring 2022 provincial meeting.

Please join us for the Alberta Council on Academic Integrity (ACAI) Spring 2022 provincial meeting, a hybrid event to be hosted virtually by Bow Valley college. Anyone keen to support academic integrity in post-secondary institutions as well as in K-12 in Alberta is welcome – students, staff, faculty, administrators, and any other interested party. You can join in person at the Bow Valley College campus in downtown Calgary, or join virtually through MS Teams.

Highlights:

  • Presentation on the Bow Valley College research project: Understanding Student Experiences with Contract Cheating and other Outsourcing Behaviours – The research team includes an administrator, a faculty member, and two student researchers from Bow Valley College with ACAI as the community partner
  • A panel discussion by English Language Learning students sharing experiences regarding academic integrity
  • Faculty sharing UDL interventions to prevent cheating
  • Reports from the EDI, Contract Cheating, and Educational Development working groups

Fake Degrees and Fraudulent Credentials: Research Project Update

Since 2020, Jamie Carmichael (Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada) and I have been partnering on research related to fake degrees and fraudulent credentials in Canada. We presented our preliminary findings last year at the 2021 European Conference on Academic Integrity and Plagiarism. Later in 2021, I contributed an invited article on fake degrees and credential fraud to a special issue of the Career Planning & Adult Development Journal focusing on the future of work.

Now Jamie and I are working on an edited book to be published by Springer Nature later this year.

We have noticed more and more discussions of qualification fraud and impersonation in the news, such as this article that talks about a situation in which the person who showed up for an interview and was hired was not the same person who showed up for the job after the hiring process was complete.

Since starting this project almost two years ago our eyes have been opened to the massive global market that exists for fake and fraudulent degrees, diplomas, and other credentials. We’ll keep you updated as our research evolves, but for now we just wanted to let you know we are still working on this and learning more every day.

Contract Cheating in Canada: Exploring Legislative Options

Webinar description

An introductory discussion about the commercial contract cheating industry (e.g., term paper mills, homework completion services, and paid imposters who take exams on behalf of students). One question people often ask is, “Why aren’t these services illegal?” The short answer is: Academic cheating services are not currently illegal in Canada, but they are in other countries. In this session we’ll provide an overview of which countries have successfully enacted legislation against predatory industry that profits from academic misconduct. We will provide an overview of the legal structures in Canada that might facilitate or present barriers to such legislation being enacted in this country. We do not promise answers or solutions to the complex issue of contract cheating, but instead provide an evidence-base for deeper discussion.

The intended audience for this session is primarily for those in Canada interested in contract cheating from the Canadian legal context. Participants from other regions are also welcome.

By the end of this session engaged participants will be able to: 

  • Describe what contract cheating is
  • Understand how legislation against contract cheating has been enacted in other countries
  • Discover legal aspects of contract cheating in Canada and beyond

Contract Cheating in Alberta and Beyond

October 21, 2021

As co-chairs of the Alberta Council on Academic Integrity working group on contract cheating, Sheryl Boisvert and I presented this webinar on contract cheating in Alberta as part of Integrity Week at the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning at the University of Calgary. We discussed essay mills, homework completion services, unethical tutoring services, and thesis consultation services that all cross the line into academic misconduct. Participants learned about the size and scope of this predatory industry and how it preys on our students, including engaging in blackmail and extortion.
