I am super excited about an upcoming workshop I am doing. I get to combine two of my favorite passions: working with language teachers and blogging. Here’s our tentative agenda:
Introduction
- What is a blog?
- Why do we blog?
Getting Ready to Blog
- Tips for creating excellent blog posts
- Using multimedia in your blog
- Blogging for and with students
Write on! Hands-on blogging
- Setting up your blog
- Writing your first blog post
- Adding categories, tags and excerpts
- Creating visual interest with photos
What do you think? Have I missed anything? What words of wisdom would you have for teachers who are learning how to blog for the first time? I’d love to hear your comments and thoughts.

This week’s webinar with Chinook Learning is “How to Develop a Social Media Policy“. Its designed for organizational leaders and managers who have to cope with guiding employees’ use of social media in the workplace.
Social media has changed how people interact with each other on line. Marketers talk about social media strategies, but that is different from an organizational policy that is designed to guide and govern users’ behaviour in social media settings. This course is based on this article “Anatomy of a Social Media Policy” that I wrote last fall, published by Social Media Today.
Participant outcomes
By the end of this webinar you will:
- Understand the differences between a social media strategy and a social media policy.
- Understand the basics of social media governance.
- Know the critical elements of a social media policy.
- Understand the importance of dialogue when it comes to striking a balance between users’ rights and responsibilities.
- Gain a deeper understanding of what a social media policy is and how to go about developing a relatively simple, straightforward policy for your organization.
Content
- Social media policy – Definition and overview; Differences between a social media strategy and a policy.
- Social media governance – What social media governance means for organizations, employers and employees.
- Anatomy of a social media policy – Learn the critical elements of a well-constructed social media policy and how the various elements work together to create a fully functioning and effective policy. Learn what they key parts are so you can build your own simple, straightforward policy.
- Balancing users’ rights with their responsibility to their employer. Why it is important to dialogue with users in your organization and tips for doing this effectively.

I’m thrilled to be working with Chinook Learning to help them launch their brand new webinar program, starting in January. We have put together a series of webinar aimed at professionals in the corporate and non-profit sectors.
The new programs include:
How to Develop a Social Media Policy
Managing Social Media Disasters
How to Lead Difficult Meetings
How to Use Scribd to Publish Documents Online
Twitter for Professionals
Each program is $45 CAD. Organizations can pay one fee and have a number of participants watch the program from around a boardroom using one common computer to show the webinar. This is excellent value for organizations looking for inexpensive professional development.
All the programs are offered from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Mountain Time, so they work as a “workplace lunch and learn” program.
Since all of these programs are offered via webinar, registrants from around the globe are welcome to attend.
