Rubrics for Grading Student Presentations

This semester I developed some rubrics for grading student presentations in class. They include criteria such as preparation and presentation skills. The rubrics are designed so that they can be used either for native speakers or language learners.

There are 4 different rubrics. I used them with my university-age students. They could also be easily used with adult learners or high school students. For younger grades, you may want to adapt them to their level.

Feel free to use them, share them or let them inspire you to create your own.

My favorite sites to make your own crosswords

I love using crosswords in language classes. They’re an excellent way to get students thinking about the vocabulary they’re learning, to challenge them and to help them recall words from memory. Here are a few of my favorite online sites where teachers can make crosswords for free or very little cost:

Armored Penguin Crossword maker – Multilingual. Love this site!

Teach-nology Crossword maker – A site especially for teachers.

Variety Games.com – This site is a little more complex in how the words and clues are put together, but once you get the hang of it, it’s great.

Tools for Educators: Crossword maker

The Teachers’ Corner.Net – They ask for a linkback to their site.

ESL Galaxy Crosswords – This site has pre-made crosswords, available by themes. The pages have colorful backgrounds, too.

I’ve also heard about an $8 app for Mac Users: KrossWords (a shareware app written by Jerome Foucher), though I haven’t tried that one myself.

Global Education Conference

November 16, 2010

The Global Education Conference, November 15-19, 2010 brings together educators from over 62 countries. Over 300 general sessions are being held, all on line, during a variety of time zones. There is no formal registration required for the conference, as all the sessions will be open and public, broadcast live using the Elluminate platform, and available in recorded formats afterward.

Presenters are sharing their slides on the conference’s Slideshare site.

Today I gave a session on Global Trends in Language Learning in the 21st Century. I’ve posted my slides there, too. Here’s a quick link to them, too.

10 Ways to Sound Smarter

Sarah Eaton speaker presenter keynote education literacyYou may wear the proper clothes and drive a snazzy car, but what about your “verbal image”?

The words you use in business or an academic setting convey a message about you. Being articulate is often associated with being competent, being able to do the job, being able to rise to new challenges. Here are 10 tips to sound smarter, more professional and to boost your “verbal image”.

  1. Ditch the fillers. You don’t like fillers in your food, do you? There are certain words or sounds that can turn a perfectly good sentence into a verbal hot dog. Words such as “like” and phrases such as “ya know”, add nothing to the quality of your verbal spread. Eliminate them and you’ll automatically sound more eloquent and intelligent.
  2. Eliminate the “um”s and “ah”s. When you do, you’ll add quality to your speech by making you sound more confident and assured.
  3. Use transition words with care. Overusing words such as “well…” and “so…” can be annoying for the listener. Listen for these words in your speech. If you need to transition from one idea to another, add a few other key words to your vocabulary. “Therefore”, “in essence…” and “my point is…” are excellent additions that can often be used in place of tired words such as “well” and “some” that add little value to what you are saying.
  4. Pause. People are afraid of dead air. If it goes on for too long, or is accompanied by a look of panic, then silence is not your friend. But deliberate, well placed pauses show you are in control as a speaker. It also gives your listener time to process what you just said. Learn the subtle art of the gentle pause to command more attention.
  5. Be precise. Instead of saying “blah, blah, blah” or “whatever!”, instead say “et cetera” or choose a word that means what you’re actually trying to say. Instead of “stuff”, say “materials” or “substance”. Precision indicates that you have chosen your words with care; always a smart choice.
  6. Make the dictionary your friend. Knowing what words to say when can mean the difference between sounding educated and sounding like an idiot. Someone recently told me of a case where the person speaking confused the words “masticate” and “macerate”. It made the sentence hilarious. Sadly, the speaker didn’t sound like so much of an expert after that.
  7. Choose words of Latin or Greek origin. Words that come from Latin or Greek are more academic. Once the dictionary is your friend, learn the origins of words. Choose words that come from either of these two classical languages and you’ll sound more educated.
  8. Choose your words carefully. You may know that a word has a Latin or Greek origin, doesn’t mean you should use it. “Masticate” and “macerate” both have origins in an ancient language. Using big words improperly doesn’t make you sound smart. Know what words mean and in what context to use them.
  9. Power your sentences with verbs – used properly. “Me Tarzan, you Jane” lacks verbs and has become the quintessential phrase indicating a lack of formal education. Using verbs alone that should be paired with another verb is equally telling. “I drunk the tea” should be either “I drank the tea” or “I had drunk the tea.” Knowing the difference between these tenses – and when to use them, is the mark of an educated speaker.
  10. Eliminate the slang. “Ain’t”, “s’up” and “bro” may be fine for the street, but they have no place in the business or academic environment. There’s a difference between being relaxed and casual and sounding like you’re from the ‘hood.

The trick is to polish your verbal image without looking like you’re trying too hard. The reason TV characters like “Fraser” are so funny is that their speech is exaggeratedly intellectual. Subtle changes can sharpen your verbal image without making you sound like a pompous know-it-all. When in doubt, less is often more.

Are Language Textbooks a Scam for Students?

It used to be that university students taking language courses would buy a textbook and a workbook for a university course. The prices were high, but they could buy used copies. A student who wanted to sell his or her book later would be careful to do the workbook in pencil so it could be erased later.

Nowadays, textbooks companies have gone all high tech. They’re encouraging teachers to do away with “old fashioned paper workbooks” in favor of an online version. The teacher needs a course code. The students need a book code. Only the magical combination of both codes will allow students access to their high tech web student activity manual.

The scam? All of these codes have expiry dates. Students who bought a second-hand book have no access to the online activity manual, unless they cough up about $100 for their own personal book code. $100 for a code? Seriously? I have students who simply can not afford this and as a result, there is no way for them to access their homework activities.

To boot, the textbook takes a communicative approach, which is super for in class, but offers little in the way of activities to assign for homework. The homework is supposed to come from the web-based activity manual.

Not all students – even college age students – like the online versions. Anything but a high speed internet connection is insufficient to use the fancy web-based versions. Students complain about difficulties setting up their online accounts and some give up even before they get to do their first activity. Their frustration levels escalate.

The textbook rep comes in to do a demo. Everything works perfectly in his presentation and students are encouraged to try again.

Here it is the end of the semester and I still have students who haven’t done any online activities. When I ask them why, they sheepishly say they find the web versions cumbersome. Either that, or they simply can’t afford the $100 for a book code. A search for old, used workbooks has ensued so they can have paper versions to work from.

I’ve been giving them activities and materials I’ve developed myself over the years. These used to be “extra practice”, but for the students who have no other way to reinforce what we do in class, they have become their only option.

Some students are very tech-savvy, very into mobile learning. Some still like paper-and-pen activities. Others may like technology, but be cash poor. Our job as educators should be to make it easy for them to learn, not more cumbersome.

At least when we bought paper versions of books and workbooks, they were ours to keep for as long as we wanted, not until the textbook publisher decided that they expired and cut off our access to them. At best, they became outdated, but they didn’t disappear into thin air. I’m a huge fan of technology, but not when it becomes a barrier to my students’ learning.
